Introduction: When You’re the One Carrying the Weight
You plan the date nights.
You initiate the hard conversations.
You circle back after an argument, send the podcast, suggest the coaching.
You’re not just participating in your marriage—you’re carrying it.
This is the silent weight so many people are bearing in their relationship: the emotional responsibility of keeping the connection alive. I see it often in my coaching work, especially with women. And while it might start from a place of love and commitment, over time it becomes exhausting.
In this episode of AwakenYou in Your Marriage, I’m opening up a conversation about what happens when only one person is initiating growth… and how that dynamic can begin to shift toward shared responsibility and mutual investment.
Because you were never meant to carry your marriage alone.
A Story I See Often (Maybe You’ll Recognize It)
One couple I worked with illustrated this dynamic perfectly. I had given them a relational homework assignment—something to help them build connection between sessions. The next week, I asked how it went.
She said, “We didn’t do it. I was kind of waiting for him to bring it up.”
When I asked why she didn’t initiate it, she said something I hear often:
“Because I wanted him to. I thought maybe he’d take the lead… especially since we’re doing this together.”
Meanwhile, he hadn’t even realized she was waiting on him.
They both cared. But they were both waiting—and building quiet frustration in the gap.
This moment became a turning point for them. Instead of continuing to silently hope the other would lead, we created a plan: after every coaching call, they’d take a moment to schedule when they’d do the work. Over time, this practice became sacred to them—a rhythm of shared engagement that they both began to cherish.
This is what shared responsibility can look like.
It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to be intentional.
The Silent Stalemate: When No One Initiates
Sometimes, both partners are waiting.
Waiting for the other to bring it up. Waiting for the right moment. Waiting for it to get better on its own.
This creates what I call the silent stalemate. A kind of emotional limbo where nothing feels bad enough to confront, but nothing feels good enough to celebrate either.
And what I often see beneath this stalemate is fear:
-
Fear of rejection
-
Fear of getting it wrong
-
Fear that effort won’t be met with appreciation
So instead of leaning in, both people pull back. And the distance between them grows.
In this episode, I offer a reframe I often use in coaching:
What if you made it a playful competition to see who could initiate first?
Who can offer the first kind word, initiate connection, or take the lead on planning time together?
This mindset shift lightens the energy and invites connection, rather than blame or pressure.
Tools for Creating Shared Effort
Shared responsibility doesn’t mean splitting everything 50/50 every day.
It means both partners are invested in the relationship and making space for its growth—even in different ways.
Here are a few practices I recommend in the episode:
-
Marriage Meetings – Weekly check-ins to cover emotional connection, logistics, and spiritual care.
-
Connection Nights – One night a week with no phones, just intentional time together.
-
Sunday Resets – Share one thing you want to feel in your marriage this week, and one thing you can do to support each other.
And if you’re the one who’s been doing more of the initiating, I also talk about how to express that desire for more shared effort—with clarity and kindness—without falling into criticism or defeat.
What’s Possible When You’re Both Showing Up
Your marriage wasn’t meant to be carried by one person.
It was designed to be a partnership. A safe place where both of you show up, not perfectly, but consistently.
When shared responsibility enters the picture, something powerful happens:
-
Resentment decreases
-
Emotional safety increases
-
Joy and connection start to re-emerge
And the very thing that felt heavy—growing your relationship—starts to feel possible again.
