How to Stop Feeling Powerless in Your Marriage by Focusing on What You Can Control

Do you ever feel like your happiness in marriage depends on whether your spouse changes?

Maybe you’ve spent countless hours thinking about what your husband or wife should do differently. You know your marriage needs help, but you’re exhausted from trying to get your spouse to understand your needs or engage in the relationship differently.

If so, you’re not alone in that struggle.

In this episode of the AwakenYou in Your Marriage Podcast, I share one of the biggest shifts that transformed my own marriage—not because everything around me suddenly changed, but because I started paying attention to what was happening inside of me.

Why Focusing on Your Spouse Can Leave You Feeling Powerless

During some of the lowest seasons in my marriage, I spent most of my emotional energy focused on my husband.

What wasn’t he doing?
Why wasn’t he understanding me?
Why didn’t he show up the way I needed?

While those concerns were real, I eventually realized that my emotional world had become centered around waiting for him to change first.

And the more I focused on things outside my control, the more helpless and resentful I became.

What Does “AwakenYou in Your Marriage” Mean?

Many people assume personal growth in marriage means becoming self-sufficient or ignoring relationship problems.

That’s not what I teach.

Awakening yourself within your marriage means learning to become aware of:

  • Your emotional triggers
  • Your thoughts and stories
  • Your fears and unmet needs
  • Your communication patterns
  • Your boundaries
  • Your relationship with God
  • Your ability to regulate your emotions

Instead of trying to control your spouse, you begin focusing on what is inside your circle of responsibility.

What Is Inside Your Circle of Control in Marriage?

One of the most important concepts I teach is the difference between what is inside your circle and what is outside your circle.

Inside your circle:

  • Your reactions
  • Your healing
  • Your communication
  • Your honesty
  • Your boundaries
  • Your emotional awareness
  • Your willingness to self-confront

Outside your circle:

  • Controlling your spouse
  • Making them understand
  • Changing their emotions
  • Forcing them to grow
  • Managing their reactions

Learning this distinction can help you stop feeling powerless and begin participating differently in your marriage.

Working on Yourself Doesn’t Mean Taking All the Responsibility

Healthy marriages require two people.

Focusing on yourself does not mean ignoring unhealthy behavior, tolerating mistreatment, or carrying the entire relationship alone.

In fact, self-awareness often helps you become more honest, set healthier boundaries, and communicate your needs with greater clarity.

How Inner Work Can Transform Your Marriage

As I learned to understand my own triggers and stop placing all my hope in another person’s ability to change, something surprising happened.

I felt less trapped.

Not because everything became perfect, but because I was no longer waiting for someone else to create all my peace, joy, and security.

Questions to Reflect On

As you listen to this episode, consider:

  • What have I become emotionally consumed with in my marriage?
  • What is inside my circle right now?
  • Where might I be giving away my power?
  • What part of me needs compassion and honesty?
  • What might my next step toward healing be?

  • Feeling powerless in your marriage
  • Waiting for your spouse to change
  • Struggling with resentment or disconnection
  • Wanting to focus on yourself without abandoning your marriage
  • Looking for healthier ways to communicate
