Marriage Preparation: What I Wish We Knew Before We Got Married

Most couples spend months planning a wedding but very little time preparing for the marriage that comes afterward.

In this episode of AwakenYou in Your Marriage, I’m sharing reflections from a recent premarital conference where my husband Jeff and I served as facilitators. As I sat in a room filled with engaged couples and couples seriously considering marriage, I found myself wondering how different our own journey might have been if we had received this kind of preparation before saying “I do.”

Over the years, Jeff and I experienced seasons of misunderstanding, conflict, and disconnection that left us questioning whether we were truly compatible. Looking back, I can see that many of the challenges we faced weren’t unique to us at all. We simply lacked awareness, practical tools, and guidance for navigating the realities of marriage.

In this episode, I explore why marriage preparation matters—not only for engaged couples but for anyone who wants to strengthen their relationship, regardless of how long they’ve been married.

Why Most Couples Aren’t Prepared for Marriage

Many people enter marriage with good intentions and deep love for one another. Yet few couples are taught how to navigate the areas that create the greatest tension over time.

Without preparation, it’s easy to interpret normal relational struggles as signs that something is wrong with the relationship itself.

The truth is that many couples encounter similar challenges involving communication, conflict, expectations, intimacy, finances, and personality differences.

Learning about these areas before problems arise can create awareness that helps couples navigate difficulties with greater confidence and understanding.

The Areas That Shape a Healthy Marriage

At the premarital conference, couples were invited to explore several foundational aspects of marriage, including:

Communication and Conflict Resolution

Every marriage experiences conflict. The difference between thriving couples and struggling couples is often found in how they communicate through disagreements and repair after hurt.

Personality Differences

Understanding personality styles can help couples appreciate differences rather than viewing them as flaws. Many conflicts arise not from bad intentions but from different ways of processing life and relationships.

Core Desires and Emotional Needs

Each person enters marriage with unique longings, fears, and expectations. Learning to recognize and communicate these needs creates greater emotional connection.

Financial Partnership

Money conversations are rarely just about dollars and cents. They often reveal deeper beliefs, values, fears, and priorities that influence the relationship.

Sexual Intimacy

Healthy sexual intimacy involves far more than physical connection. Understanding expectations, communication, emotional safety, and desire can help couples navigate this important aspect of marriage with greater confidence.

Shared Values and Vision

Couples who intentionally discuss what they are building together often find greater unity and purpose as they navigate life’s challenges.

It’s Never Too Late to Start

One of the biggest takeaways from this experience was realizing that marriage preparation isn’t only for engaged couples.

Many married couples never had these conversations before their wedding day.

The good news is that it’s never too late to begin.

Whether you’ve been married six months or twenty years, you can choose to become more intentional about understanding yourself, understanding your spouse, and building the relationship you want to create together.

A Simple Challenge for This Week

As you listen to this episode, choose one area of your marriage that could benefit from more attention.

Maybe it’s communication.

Maybe it’s conflict.

Maybe it’s understanding each other’s needs more clearly.

Choose one area and start a conversation.

Small, intentional conversations often become the foundation for meaningful change.

In This Episode You’ll Learn:

  • Why marriage preparation matters long after the wedding day
  • The common relationship challenges most couples face
  • How communication and conflict impact connection
  • Why personality differences create tension in marriage
  • The role of intimacy, finances, and emotional needs in long-term relationships
  • A practical way to start strengthening your marriage today

Why That Small Moment Hurt More Than It Should Have: What It Reveals About You Ep 263

Why That Small Moment Hurt More Than It Should Have: What It Reveals About You Ep 263 | Your Marriage Coach

Why That Small Moment Hurt More Than It Should Have: What It Reveals About You

Have you ever had a small moment in your marriage… that hit way deeper than it should have?

It wasn’t a fight.
Nothing dramatic happened.

But something in you dropped…
and you couldn’t quite shake it.

In this episode of AwakenYou in Your Marriage, I share a personal story from our anniversary dinner that started with a simple gift—and uncovered a deeper belief I didn’t even realize I was still carrying.

If you’ve ever wondered why certain moments feel bigger than they “should,” this episode will help you understand what’s really happening underneath—and how to move toward connection instead of confusion.

Anniversary Gift Setup: When Hope and Doubt Collide (00:00)

It started with a blue velvet box.

At dinner on our anniversary, Jeff slid a gift across the table. He even knelt down and began videotaping the moment. I could feel excitement rising…

And at the same time, there was a quieter voice underneath it all:

“What if it is something beautiful… and you don’t even like it?”

Even in a moment meant to feel special, there was hesitation—like I was bracing.

The Medal Reveal: When Reality Doesn’t Match Expectation (02:33)

Inside the box wasn’t jewelry.

It was a medal—an “outstanding service” award from Jeff’s work.

And while nothing outwardly dramatic happened, internally… something shifted.

A quiet drop.
A subtle letdown.

And almost immediately, my mind began assigning meaning to the moment.

Why Disappointment Can Hit So Hard (03:09)

What surprised me most wasn’t the gift…

It was how strong my reaction felt.

Because objectively, I could see:

  • He gave me something
  • He was trying to acknowledge me

But that’s not how it felt.

This is where many of us get stuck—confused by our own emotional response.

Journaling the Trigger: Slowing the Moment Down (05:14)

Instead of reacting or brushing it off, I got curious.

Through journaling and reflection, I began to unpack what was really happening beneath the surface.

And that’s when a deeper thought surfaced.

The Lie: “I Am Undeserving” (06:08)

The thought came clearly:

“I am undeserving.”

Not just about the gift…
but about something deeper.

And it felt familiar.

This wasn’t new—it was a belief that had been quietly shaping how I experience moments in my marriage.

Anchoring in Truth: What Scripture Reminded Me (08:11)

In that moment, I had a choice.

To let the belief define the experience…
or to gently challenge it.

I came back to truth:

  • I am created in His image
  • I am known and formed with intention (Psalm 139)
  • I am chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
  • I am precious and honored (Isaiah 43:4)
  • I am more than a conqueror through Him (Romans 8:37)

These truths didn’t erase the feeling…

But they gave me something steady to stand on while I processed it.

The Meaning We Attach to Moments (10:02)

Here’s what I began to see:

The moment itself wasn’t the full story.

It was the meaning I attached to it.

I went from:
“This didn’t land the way I hoped…”

to:
“This confirms something about me.”

This is something we all do—often without realizing it.

The Real Longing: Wanting to Feel Cherished (10:48)

Underneath my reaction wasn’t just disappointment.

It was longing.

I wanted to feel:

  • cherished
  • chosen
  • deeply loved
  • intentionally thought of

And when that longing wasn’t met in the way I expected…

my mind filled in the gap with a story.

How to Share This With Your Spouse (13:10)

The next step wasn’t to blame Jeff… or shut myself down.

It was to invite him into my experience.

Not from accusation, but from honesty.

Sharing:

  • what I had hoped for
  • what I felt
  • and what actually feels meaningful to me

This is where intimacy grows—not in perfection, but in understanding.

Reflect on Your Own Moments (15:40)

Think about a recent moment that stayed with you longer than expected.

Instead of asking:
“Why did they do that?”

Ask yourself:

What was I longing for in that moment?
What story did I attach to it?

That space—between what happened and what it meant—is where growth begins.

Closing: Creating Connection From Awareness (19:59)

Small moments in marriage are rarely just about the moment.

They’re invitations.

Invitations to:

  • understand yourself more deeply
  • communicate more honestly
  • and create connection with intention

But recently, something shifted.

And I can’t fully explain it that way anymore.

Key Takeaways on Faith and Intimacy

  • Not all transformation comes from effort—some of it comes through surrender
  • You can honor both personal growth tools and your spiritual experience
  • Naming your truth doesn’t have to create disconnection—it can deepen it
  • Emotional and sexual intimacy are deeply connected to your ability to soften and be seen
  • You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin opening up

Reflection Questions

Take a quiet moment and sit with these:

  • Where in my life am I trying to “figure it out” instead of allowing something deeper to meet me?
  • Is there a part of my story I’ve been editing or holding back?
  • What does surrender look like for me right now—in my marriage or within myself?

Final Thoughts

This episode is an invitation.

Not to believe what I believe…
but to consider that there may be more available to you than what effort alone can create.

And maybe… just maybe…

the shift you’re longing for isn’t something you have to force.

Why You Keep Ending Up in the Same Place in Your Marriage (and How to Break the Pattern) Ep 261

Why You Keep Ending Up in the Same Place in Your Marriage (and How to Break the Pattern) Ep 261 | Your Marriage Coach

Why You Keep Ending Up in the Same Place in Your Marriage (and How to Break the Pattern)

Do you ever feel like no matter what you try…

you and your spouse keep ending up in the same place?

The same arguments.
The same disconnection.
The same frustration.

Maybe you’ve read the books…
had the conversations…
even gone to counseling…

and still—

nothing seems to stick.

In this episode of AwakenYou in Your Marriage, we explore why this happens—and what it actually takes to create real change.

Because it’s not about trying harder.

It’s about understanding what’s happening underneath the patterns you keep repeating.

Why Couples Stay Stuck in the Same Patterns

Many couples believe they need a “fresh start.”

A new agreement.
A new plan.
A better effort.

But starting over often doesn’t work…

because the same internal patterns are still driving behavior.

  • the same fears
  • the same interpretations
  • the same emotional reactions

So when something familiar happens…

you fall right back into the same dynamic.

because the root hasn’t been addressed.

What’s Really Driving Your Relationship Patterns

If you feel stuck in your marriage, it’s likely not about the surface issue.

There are often deeper drivers at play, like:

  • fear of rejection
  • pressure or performance anxiety
  • unspoken expectations
  • emotional disconnection
  • past experiences that shaped how you relate to intimacy

Until these are seen and understood…

they continue to shape your interactions—without you even realizing it.

How These Patterns Show Up in Intimacy

This cycle often becomes most visible in your sex life.

One partner reaches—wanting closeness.
The other hesitates—feeling pressure or something harder to name.

And in that moment…

stories are created.

  • “I’m not wanted.”
  • “I can’t get this right.”

Without conversation, those stories become reality.

And the pattern continues.

A Real-Life Example: When Starting Over Didn’t Work

In this episode, Christine shares a personal story from her own marriage—

where she found herself carrying the weight of intimacy, waiting for her husband to initiate, and feeling stuck in the same loop.

Even after trying structured solutions like taking turns initiating…

the deeper pattern remained.

It wasn’t until she began to look beneath the surface—

at both her internal experience and what might be happening inside her husband—

that things began to shift.

What Starting Fresh Actually Means

Starting fresh in your marriage isn’t about resetting behavior.

It’s about bringing awareness into the moment.

It looks like:

  • noticing your reactions as they happen
  • questioning the meaning you’re creating
  • choosing curiosity over defensiveness
  • staying present instead of defaulting to old roles

This is how patterns begin to change—not by force, but by awareness.

A Simple Practice to Break the Pattern

The next time you feel yourself slipping into a familiar dynamic…

pause.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What am I making this mean?

And if it feels safe, share a piece of that with your spouse:

  • “I notice I’m starting to feel rejected…”
  • “I’m feeling pressure and I don’t fully understand why…”

This small shift interrupts the pattern—and opens the door for connection.

What If Your Spouse Isn’t Ready?

This is a real concern for many couples.

You may be growing in awareness…
while your spouse is not engaging in the same way.

But change doesn’t require perfection from both people.

When one person begins to step out of the pattern…

it starts to shift the dynamic.

And that matters more than you might think.

When You Feel Alone in Intimacy: What’s Really Going On Beneath the Surface

Have you ever felt like you’re the only one carrying the intimacy in your relationship?

Like you’re the one thinking about it… initiating… wondering why it’s not happening…

while your spouse feels distant, uninterested, or hard to reach?

Or maybe you’re on the other side—feeling the pressure of expectation and not fully understanding why it feels so difficult to respond.

In this episode of AwakenYou in Your Marriage, we slow down and look beneath the surface of this dynamic.

Because what looks like a problem with sex…
is often something much deeper.

Why Initiation Isn’t the Real Issue

Many couples focus on:

  • how often they’re having sex
  • who initiates
  • what needs to change

But these surface-level patterns often hide deeper emotional dynamics.

This episode explores why “who initiates” isn’t actually the problem—and why trying to fix it directly can leave couples feeling more stuck.

  • The deeper emotional needs driving the “pursuer”
  • What may be happening beneath the surface for the partner who withdraws

The Truth About Intimacy in Marriage

If intimacy feels one-sided…

it’s not because one person is doing it wrong.

It’s often because both partners are carrying something unseen.

Until those deeper layers are understood,
couples can stay stuck in cycles of:

  • pursuit and withdrawal
  • pressure and avoidance
  • longing and confusion

A Gentle Invitation

Instead of asking:

“How do we fix our sex life?”

Try asking:

  • What might be true underneath our dynamic that hasn’t been spoken yet?
  • What assumptions have I been making about my spouse?
  • What am I longing for… that I haven’t put into words?

Ready for Support?

If you’re realizing there’s more underneath your relationship dynamic than you’ve been able to navigate on your own…

Why Reaching for Your Spouse Feels So Hard (and What It Really Means) Ep 259

Why Reaching for Your Spouse Feels So Hard (and What It Really Means) Ep 259 | Your Marriage Coach

When You Desire Your Spouse… But Don’t Reach for Them

There’s a moment many couples quietly experience:

You feel desire.
You think about reaching for your spouse.
But something stops you.

Or maybe you do reach…
and their response lingers longer than expected.

Not because of what happened…
but because of what it meant.

In this episode, we explore why initiation in long-term marriage becomes so emotionally charged—and how rebuilding emotional intimacy changes everything.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why initiation often feels vulnerable and emotionally risky
  • How rejection wounds shape your experience of intimacy
  • The hidden pressure that turns sex into a performance
  • How emotional intimacy and differentiation shift the entire dynamic
  • A simple way to respond differently the next time this moment happens

The Silent Desire Most Couples Don’t Talk About

(00:00)

Many people carry desire internally… without expressing it.

Not because they don’t care—but because:

  • they’re unsure how it will land
  • they fear misinterpretation
  • or they’ve learned it’s safer not to risk it

This is where emotional disconnection quietly begins.

Why Initiation Can Feel So Painful

(02:11)

Initiation isn’t just about physical connection.

It touches deeper questions like:

  • Do you still want me?
  • Is that all you want from me?

Without emotional intimacy, these moments can feel like personal evaluations instead of shared experiences.

There’s Always More Happening Beneath the Surface

(03:01)

What looks like a simple interaction often carries layers of:

  • past experiences
  • unprocessed emotions
  • internal narratives

These layers shape how we interpret our spouse’s response—often without realizing it.

The Chain Reaction That Happens in Seconds

(05:04)

One moment can quickly turn into a full internal story:

A response → a meaning → an emotional reaction → a protective behavior

Over time, this creates patterns that reinforce emotional distance instead of emotional intimacy.

The Deep Need to Feel Chosen and Seen

(07:02)

At the core of initiation are two powerful desires:

  • To feel seen for who you are
  • To feel chosen, not out of obligation—but desire

When these needs feel unmet, intimacy becomes confusing, painful, or pressured.

What “Not Tonight” Can Actually Mean

(10:35)

A simple response can carry very different meanings internally:

  • “They’re just tired”
  • vs.
  • “I’m not wanted”

Learning to separate what happened from what we make it mean is key to rebuilding emotional intimacy.

When Sex Starts to Feel Like a Test

(13:37)

Over time, intimacy can shift from connection to performance.

Instead of:

  • openness
  • curiosity
  • presence

It becomes:

  • pressure
  • expectation
  • fear of getting it wrong

And when something feels like a test, many people either avoid it… or show up inauthentically.

The “Two Ships Passing” Dynamic in Marriage

(19:01)

Many couples fall into a painful loop:

  • One partner seeks connection through sex
  • The other needs emotional intimacy first

Without understanding this difference, couples unintentionally miss each other—creating frustration and distance.

The Shift That Changes Everything: Differentiation

(24:18)

As you grow in self-trust and emotional grounding, something begins to shift.

Instead of:

  • making your spouse’s response about your worth

You begin to:

  • stay connected to yourself
  • stay curious about your spouse

Differentiation allows you to:

  • honor your desire
  • respect their experience
  • and still move toward connection

This is where emotional intimacy begins to deepen.

A Simple Practice to Try in the Moment

(30:21)

The next time initiation happens—or doesn’t—pause and ask:

  • What am I making this mean?
  • Is that actually true?

Then, if you feel open:

Gently share your experience without blame.

This creates space for connection instead of protection.

You’re Not Alone in This Experience

(31:30)

If this dynamic feels familiar, you’re not the only one navigating it.

This is part of the deeper work of rebuilding emotional intimacy in marriage—learning how to stay open, grounded, and connected even in vulnerable moments.

If you’re ready to explore this more deeply, you’re invited to schedule a Courageous Love Conversation—a space to slow down, reflect, and begin creating a new experience of connection in your marriage.
