Marriage Preparation: What I Wish We Knew Before We Got Married
Most couples spend months planning a wedding but very little time preparing for the marriage that comes afterward.
In this episode of AwakenYou in Your Marriage, I’m sharing reflections from a recent premarital conference where my husband Jeff and I served as facilitators. As I sat in a room filled with engaged couples and couples seriously considering marriage, I found myself wondering how different our own journey might have been if we had received this kind of preparation before saying “I do.”
Over the years, Jeff and I experienced seasons of misunderstanding, conflict, and disconnection that left us questioning whether we were truly compatible. Looking back, I can see that many of the challenges we faced weren’t unique to us at all. We simply lacked awareness, practical tools, and guidance for navigating the realities of marriage.
In this episode, I explore why marriage preparation matters—not only for engaged couples but for anyone who wants to strengthen their relationship, regardless of how long they’ve been married.
Why Most Couples Aren’t Prepared for Marriage
Many people enter marriage with good intentions and deep love for one another. Yet few couples are taught how to navigate the areas that create the greatest tension over time.
Without preparation, it’s easy to interpret normal relational struggles as signs that something is wrong with the relationship itself.
The truth is that many couples encounter similar challenges involving communication, conflict, expectations, intimacy, finances, and personality differences.
Learning about these areas before problems arise can create awareness that helps couples navigate difficulties with greater confidence and understanding.
The Areas That Shape a Healthy Marriage
At the premarital conference, couples were invited to explore several foundational aspects of marriage, including:
Communication and Conflict Resolution
Every marriage experiences conflict. The difference between thriving couples and struggling couples is often found in how they communicate through disagreements and repair after hurt.
Personality Differences
Understanding personality styles can help couples appreciate differences rather than viewing them as flaws. Many conflicts arise not from bad intentions but from different ways of processing life and relationships.
Core Desires and Emotional Needs
Each person enters marriage with unique longings, fears, and expectations. Learning to recognize and communicate these needs creates greater emotional connection.
Financial Partnership
Money conversations are rarely just about dollars and cents. They often reveal deeper beliefs, values, fears, and priorities that influence the relationship.
Sexual Intimacy
Healthy sexual intimacy involves far more than physical connection. Understanding expectations, communication, emotional safety, and desire can help couples navigate this important aspect of marriage with greater confidence.
Shared Values and Vision
Couples who intentionally discuss what they are building together often find greater unity and purpose as they navigate life’s challenges.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
One of the biggest takeaways from this experience was realizing that marriage preparation isn’t only for engaged couples.
Many married couples never had these conversations before their wedding day.
The good news is that it’s never too late to begin.
Whether you’ve been married six months or twenty years, you can choose to become more intentional about understanding yourself, understanding your spouse, and building the relationship you want to create together.
A Simple Challenge for This Week
As you listen to this episode, choose one area of your marriage that could benefit from more attention.
Maybe it’s communication.
Maybe it’s conflict.
Maybe it’s understanding each other’s needs more clearly.
Choose one area and start a conversation.
Small, intentional conversations often become the foundation for meaningful change.
